My favorite chip is the 16F628, which is very similar to the 16F84 and has the same pinout, but it is better in every way and also cheaper. The 16F648 is the same thing with double the program memory. I made an LCD controller that plugs into a computer's serial port and displays status messages using the shareware program LCDC.
